Carbon Fiber

Carbon fiber is the essential ingredient in the highest performing composite materials. Carbon fiber is made of thin, strong crystalline filaments of carbon that can be thinner than a strand of human hair and gains its strength when numerous filaments are twisted together into a yarn. It is produced in a continuous operation, during which the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor undergoes a series of precisely controlled processes. By exposing the precursor to extremely high temperatures, chemical changes occur which create high strength and stiffness-to-weight ratios through oxidation, carbonization and graphitization. High strength created by the production process means that HexTow® carbon fiber, when combined with a resin matrix, offers a superior lightweight alternative that is stronger than steel, lighter than aluminum and as stiff as titanium.

Woven Reinforcements

Hexcel manufactures a complete line of fabrics and reinforcements available in a range of weave styles for aerospace and industrial markets. Our products include carbon, glass, aramid, and specialty fibers. Examples range from uni-directional reinforcements, to woven fabrics and multi-axial reinforcements that utilize multiple layers and angles of unidirectional fibers incorporated into a single fabric for exceptional strength.

Resin Systems

Hexcel has a wide variety of proprietary resin systems that are used by Hexcel to manufacture prepreg or sold in liquid and film form for manufacturing composite parts. Resin system innovation initiatives are targeted at helping customers reduce their cycle time and increase their production through-put, including lower curing temperatures, faster curing times, and enhancing the flow characteristics of the resin formulations, particularly for out-of-autoclave infusion and resin transfer molding manufacturing processes.

Carbon Prepregs

Carbon prepregs consist of woven carbon fiber that has been pre-impregnated with an epoxy resin system. This resin system includes the proper curing agent so the prepreg is ready to lay into a mold and then cured. Curing consists of heating and adding pressure, which then leads to exceptional structural properties of strength and durability delivered in a lightweight package. Hexcel provides a range of prepregs under the HexPly® trademark for aerospace and industrial applications, using specially formulated resin matrix systems. HexPly® prepregs are reinforced with woven, multiaxial and unidirectional carbon and glass fibers. The aerospace industry is the largest consumer of Hexcel prepregs, for civil aircraft, military jets, helicopters, aero-engines and space satellite and launchers.

Honeycomb

Hexcel was the first company in the U.S. to manufacture expanded honeycomb on a commercial scale and today is the world leader in honeycomb manufacturing for the commercial aerospace market. We offer hundreds of variations produced with a wide range of materials and cell configurations. Honeycomb is exceptionally stiff and lightweight and is the key structural component in our engineered products such as engine nacelles, floor panels, ailerons and rudders in aircraft, and helicopter blades.

Our award-winning HexWeb® Acousti-Cap® sound attenuating honeycomb enables aircraft engine designers to achieve dramatic noise reduction during takeoff and landing without a structural weight penalty.
